Most rivers that flow through the northern plains originate from the melting ice of glaciers in the higher reaches of the Himalayas; the largest and the most important being the holy river, Ganges. The ancient Indian civilization prospered along the fertile plains of this mighty river and left behind a trail of rich and varied monuments - the ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples, the forts, palaces, mosques tombs of Muslim invaders and lastly the regal buildings made by the British. Taj Mahal Agra

Seen from across the river Yamuna, the Taj Mahal, as seen in the plate presents the most exquisite sight. Situated 2.5Kms from the Red Fort of Agra from where the Mughal emperors ruled the country.
Temples of Banares

The city of Benaras, also called Varanasi, is situated on the western bank of the holy river Ganges in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
